DescriptionBaluster type measure with double-volute thumbpiece; double-volute thumbpiece with fleur-de-lis extension in front soldered to face of cover; flat circular cover hinged to upper face of handle; baluster shaped body with galleried rim and flared base with paired incised circles around center of rim and above and below lower handle attachment; conventional S-scroll strap handle of narrow D-shaped section with shaped-shield terminal attached at rim and with lozenge and strut to lower section of body.Label TextAlthough some baluster measures with bud thumb pieces date from the second half of the eighteenth century, they were largely supplanted in that period by those with double-volute thumb pieces. The attachment of the double-volute thumb piece to the cover was reinforced with a fleur-de-lis extension in front of the thumb piece. Many measures were made by firms that specialized in their manufacture. It is not a mistake or mere coincidence that many of these baluster measures bear the touch mark of William Fasson, who was one of their principal producers.
