DescriptionMeasure; baluster type (bud thumbpiece); flat circular cover with paired incised circles at edge and in center on face; bud thumbpiece with triangular extension with molded sides in front soldered to face of cover; cover hinged to handle; baluster-shaped body with galleried rim and flared base with paired incised lines around center of rim, center of body, and lower section of body; S-scroll strap handle of narrow D-shaped section attached with shield-shaped terminal attached at rim and with strut to lower section of body
Label TextA considerable number of eighteenth-century baluster measures are stamped with raised-letter dies with what are probably the initials of various American colonies, commonwealths, and provinces, as well as towns within them. Most of these are associated with the New England region. They occur most frequently on baluster measures with double-volute thumbpieces. It is not surprising to find them on this example and CWF accession 1933-230, since these are late bud examples from the double-volute period.
MarkingsProbable American verification mark "CM" for colony or commonwealth of Massachusetts and "Y" possibly for the town of Yarmouth stamped on face of body below rim to right of handle. Larger "Y" also possibly for the town of Yarmouth stamped on upper face of cover opposite handle
