DescriptionGarter made of red silk wefts with undyed silk warps used for woven decoration along center portion and fringed at the ends. Woven-in motto reads "Wove Without Sight". Additional decoration includes birds, lion, elk, squirrel, flowers and symmetrical patterns in warp-patterning.Label TextIn the eighteenth century, most garters were simple ribbons or tapes that were tied tightly around the legs to hold up the stockings. Originally one of a pair, this garter has a woven verse that suggests it was made by someone who was not able to see. The garter was found in Connecticut and may have been used there originally.
