DescriptionA mat of rectangular shape comprised of splints with varying widths woven together in a plain plaited pattern. The splints, when at the edges of the mat are wrapped over and secured by the splint running in the opposite direction.
Label TextBed mats, like this oak splint example, were used on bedsteads that utilized rope supports. The mat could add a layer of support between the rope and the mattress that rested on top. The extra support provided by the mat could possibly help prevent the mattress from sagging. Basketmakers could have easily made these types of mats as they are made with the same weaving techniques. The relationship between baskets makers and bed mats is potentially highlighted by Col. Francis Taylors June 5th, 1789 diary entry that reads, “Old George brought a cover to lay on bedcords and a Basket which I bought for 4/-.”
