DescriptionThis rectangular taffeta has a warp-printed design of meandering ribbons holding roses, from which sprout smaller flowers, leaves, and buds. The design has a straight repeat that is offset in every row. The silk has a light green-blue ground, and the design is executed in 3 shades of pink, 4 shades of green, 2 shades of grey, two shades of purple, yellow, and cream. The top and bottom edges are raw. The left and right sides are selvedges. The selvedges are 1/8” (27 warps) wide. They are held in a plain weave with striated salmon warps and a single thick cord along the edge. There is an unpicked seam line ¼” from the bottom edge, with another stitch line 1 ½” from the bottom edge, possibly from a tape hem. There are stitch lines along each selvedge with remnants of 2-ply linen thread.Label TextThe fuzzy patterning of this silk was produced by printing or painting the warp before weaving, producing a textile called “chiné” or “clouded silk.”
