DescriptionThis is a textile fragment of brown silk satin brocaded in two shades of grass green and three shades each of blue, mauve, and rose. The design consists of sprays of zinnias, bell-shaped flowers, and trailing vines of cabbage roses. The design is enhanced by a sub-pattern of floating wefts, especially around the vine pattern. The fragment has corded selvedges.Label TextThis textile, with its sinuous floral patterns, is typical of English-produced silks and the Rococo designs that were so popular in Britain, the Continent, and the United States in the middle of the 18th century. The brown ground fabric is relatively rare for the period, when most textiles featured floral patterns on light-colored silks. The brown tone makes the pastel-colored sprays of flowers appear bright and vibrant.
