DescriptionThis is a rectangular blanket striped with walnut brown and natural in the horizontal direction. The blanket is woven of heavy homespun wool in twill weave. The weaving is worked in two panels with a butted center seam in which the stripes are not matched. At the top are red wool initials "D A S" worked in cross stitches. The ends of the blanket are hemmed; the sides are finished with the selvages.
Label TextAlthough it has no Virginia provenance, this striped woolen blanket is similar in color, weave, and pattern to a fragment found archaeologically at the 1760 level of the Wetherburn's Tavern well. In an era without central heating, blankets were essential parts of a well-furnished bedstead. The Wetherburns Tavern inventory listed 21 blankets.
Markings"D A S" in red embroidery
ProvenanceOther than vendor, there is no known provenance.
