DescriptionThis is a rectangular textile fragment of faux printed patchwork in orange, red, brown, and white. The design consists of leaves, flowers, peacocks, stripes and abstract patterns, in addition to two vignettes: 1) a bird, liberty cap, and shield with the motto "1876 PEACE" and 2) a "1776" bell with a trophy group of flags, drums, and cannons.
Label TextPrinted textiles with patriotic motifs were popular in the United States, especially after the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Textile companies were enlarged to produce many new fabrics to meet the demand.
