DescriptionOne of a pair of cylindrical mugs with flared bases and loop handles. Bluish tin glaze decorated in blue with a Chinese peony, bamboo, and a gnarled root; dashes on the handle.Label TextCoffee cans, or straight-sided cups, were used for both coffee and chocolate. They did not initially require saucers as did similar cups with rounded bases. The later creamware examples listed in late-eighteenth-century pattern books indicate, however, that by that time cans and saucers were designed to be used together.
