DescriptionWoman's gown bodice or jacket of blue ribbed silk, brocaded with salmon, pink and orange flowers, and green leaves; supplementary weft sub-pattern in the ground. Bodice has squared, untrimmed neckline, heavily boned at the fronts, styled to lace closed at center front. Boned flap covers the lacing eyelets. The garment boning runs vertically, with three additional cross bones on each side. Neckline is faced with ribbed silk ribbon, orange-red or salmon color. Sleeves, cut in 2 pieces and seamed at front and back, end in applied wing cuffs over the elbows. Cuffs are faced with orange-red ribbed silk. Separately constructed padded peplum pieces are stitched to the waist seam. Center back seam ends in a modified diamond-shaped piece extending below the waist. Jacket bodice and sleeves are fully lined with cream tabby linen, finished on the interior to cover all raw edges. (Pieces appear to be lined first, then stitched together.)ProvenancePurchased by source at Christie's, South Kensington, Sale #6667, Lot 158, 11/15/1994.
