DescriptionDress sleeve: pink beige silk with 2 alternating brocaded ribbon-stripes in pattern of small bouquets and scattered rose buds, with brocading wefts in rose, pink, ivory, and green on cannele patterned ground. Wrist length with shaped elbow; overlapping placket with 2 buttonholes at wrist; lined throughout with natural linen (bias-cut). Selvedge: 1/2" corded green silk.MarkingsHandwritten exhibition tag attached, "Sleeve of gown worn by Lady Spotswood, wife of General Alex'r Spottswood, Colonial Governor of Virginia, 1710 (or 1714)."
ProvenanceDonor is a Spotswood descendant, "one of my great-grandmothers was a Mary Randolph Spottswood Berkeley."
