DescriptionSquat globular pot with flared neck, small cylindrical foot ring, loop handle, and broad cylindrical spout; concave cover with a round hole in the center attached to top. Bluish tin glaze decorated in blue with a Chinese man holding a fan seated in a landscape; on the rim, trellis diaper; on handle and cover, floral sprays.Label TextSmall spitting pots or spittoons in many ceramic materials were produced for individual use from the end of the seventeenth century through the eighteenth century. A 1696 document refers to them as "spitting potts." Other recorded examples of this form include an undecorated piece and one painted in blue with the traditional squatting Chinese figure.
The London attribution is based on the deep blue color and the decoration.
